The Yosemite National Park Silver Bullion Coin will be issued as part of the new bullion program created to accompany a new circulating commemorative quarter program.
The 5 ounce silver coin will be an exact duplicate of the Yosemite Quarter issued for the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The obverse of the coin carries a portrait of George Washington, and the reverse features a view of El Capitan, a famous granite monolith located within the park, which rises more than 3,000 feet above the valley floor.
Precious metals investors and collectors have eagerly been awaiting the release of the coin, which will mark the third issue of the series. The United States Mint encountered numerous delays in the early stages of production. By law, the coin must be issued during the 2010 calendar year.
Yosemite National Park was created through the efforts of two famous conservationalists, John Muir and Robert Underwood. Their campaign eventually convinced Congress to set aside 1,500 square miles of forest land in 1890. The area took on its familiar name when the National Park Service took over protection of the land in 1916.
