The United States Mint will issue Mount Hood National Forest Silver Bullion Coins as last of five 2010 releases for the new bullion coin program.
The design of the over-sized silver bullion coins will be taken from the Mount Hood Quarter, already released in November 2010. The portrait of George Washington on the obverse will be paired with an image from the National Forest on the reverse of the coin. The design selected for the reverse presents a view of Mount Hood with Lost Lake pictured in the foreground.
Following the format of the series, the coins will contain 5 ounces of .999 fine silver. This weight and fineness will be indicated on the edge of the coin as incused edge lettering. The bullion coins will be issued by the United States Mint through their network of authorized purchasers. The official release date has not yet been announced.
Mount Hood National Forest is located east of Portland, Oregon and encompasses more than one million acres of land. The area was first established as Bull Run Forest Reserve in 1892. After a merger with Cascade National Forest and a name change, it became Mount Hood National Forest in 1924. Today it is one of the most visited National Forests in the United States.
