The mintage levels for the silver bullion coins bearing the designs of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program are determined at the discretion of the United States Secretary of the Treasury. This is a different standard than the American Silver Eagles, which are required to be struck to fulfill public demand.
For the first year of release, production of 165,000 of the America the Beautiful 5 ounce silver bullion coins has been planned. This will be divided equally amongst the five different designs depicting Hot Springs National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and Mount Hood National Forest. The number of coins produced and issued by the United States Mint may be adjusted in future years based on market demand.
The production of only 33,000 coins for each design, has elevated their status to that of modern rarities rather than bullion coins. This resulted in the US Mint imposing specific terms and conditions for the distribution of the coins by the authorized purchaser network. The maximum premium that may be charged is limit to 10% above cost and limits of one per household must be enforced.
Separately, the US Mint will issue numismatic versions of the coins with even lower mintages. Only 27,000 for each of the five designs for 2010 will be produced and sold. All coins will be produced before the close of the year, although sales will not begin until 2011. As numismatic products, they would be available for sale directly from the Mint.
