The US Mint will release the Grand Canyon National Park Silver Bullion Coin in 2010 as part of a brand new bullion coin program. The series features the designs of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, stuck in five ounces of .999 fine silver.
The design of the coin will be an exact duplicate of the previously issued Grand Canyon National Park Quarter. The obverse will feature a restored portrait of George Washington as it appeared on the original 1932 Washington Quarter designed by John Flanagan. The reverse will feature a canyon level view of the granaries above the Nankoweap Delta in Marble Canyon near the Colorado River, as designed by Phebe Hemphill.
The America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins will represent the largest weight silver bullion coins ever produced by the United States Mint. The coins will be three inches in diameter with the weight and fineness indicated on the edge of the coin. The release is expected to take place before the close of 2010.
Grand Canyon National Park has been admired for its beauty and geological significance. It was first protected by the federal government as a Forest Reserve in 1893, and then as a National Monument. It was officially designated as a National Park in 1919.
